Parental Involvement in School

Studies have indicated that children whose parents and/or other significant adults share in their formal education EducatingKids.jpgtend to do better in school. Some benefits that have been identified that measure parental involvement in education include:

  • Higher grades and test scores
  • Long term academic achievement
  • Positive attitudes and behavior
  • More successful programs
  • More effective schools

All parents want their children to become successful, caring adults. Similarly, many parents want to be involved with the formal education of their children. Sometimes, however, they don't know where to start, when to find the time, or how to go about making positive connections with the school.  At the most basic level, parents can begin encouraging the education of their children by showing that they truly value education themselves.

PARENT INFORMATION HANDBOOK 2012-2013

Sanger Unified School District believes that parent involvement is a critical component in the growth, development, happiness and success of every student.  Parents are encouraged to be an active participant in their child's education.

The Sanger Unified School District Parent Information Handbook is distributed to every parent on the first day of school.  A copy is provided below for your convenience.

New State Law:

"Shots before School"
All 7th through 12th graders graders are now required to get a whooping cough (Tdap) shot before starting the 2011-2012 school year.  Without proof of immunization, a student will not be allowed to register for classes.  The law is explained on the State Website.

Common Core Standards - are designed to ensure real understanding. The materials are designed to go deeper into fewer topics, so kids master the material instead of memorizing. At the same time, the learning is more hands-on with a focus on what students will use in life. For more information click on the Common Core Standards link at the right

PROGRAM IMPROVEMENT INFORMATION
Public School Choice:  Students who attend a Program Improvement Year 1 or 2 school (Centerville, Del Rey, Lincoln, Lone Star and Wilson) are eligible for public school choice in the 2012-13 school year.  Parents may choose to send their students to Fairmont or Madison Elementary School, with transportation paid for by the district (if the distance from your home to the requested school exceeds the maximum walking distance set by the district).  The number of students who can transfer with paid transportation may be limited by the amount of money available to pay for transportation costs.  If there is not enough money available, priority will be given to the lowest-achieving, low-income students.  However, you may always request a school transfer without paid transportation.  When your child's home school is no longer labeled a PI school due to improved test scores, your child may continue at your school of choice, but the district is no longer obligated to provide transportation.

For more information regarding the performance of all of the above schools, you may visit the California Department of Education "Accountability Progress Reporting" website at:   http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ar/

If your child attends Centerville, Del Rey, Lincoln, Lone Star, or Wilson, and you would like to request either Fairmont or Madison for the remainder of this school year, you must fill out the "School Choice" parent application and return it to District Office by Friday, October 26th.  Applications are available at your school, the District Office, or can be download from the list below.  If you have any questions you may contact the district at 559-524-6596.
